People remember how you make them feel. In the audio world there can be a lot of frustration floating around and it is said that “sound guys” are among the angriest species on the planet. We shatter this stereotype. We share a true passion for our position and feel like it is our calling. We are not musicians or producers. We are not singers, performers or disgruntled “sound guys”. We are Audio Engineers. We have found our home behind consoles, tweaking compressors, bussing drums, setting up mics, running cables and processing vocals. At Front of House (FOH) is where we feel most comfortable and have the most fun. Engineers possess a natural curiosity so we might know a little about playing instruments, singing and producing also. After all, it comes with the territory.
Every show we do is important. We’ve all heard that cliche. Its cliche because its true though. Every show is, actually, very important. Each live performance is the crux where the artist meets their fan base face to face. The impact of this interaction on either side of the stage can not be overstated. The audiences expectations are impossibly high. Nothing short of astonishment and the most incredible performance of the artists career is acceptable. Every artist carries this incredible weight onto stage night after night. This is where we we do our best work; under the pressure to accurately translate an artists voice, message and energy beyond the impossibly high expectations of the audience every night.
Conveying sentiment and thought is what records are for. This is not news to anyone. It is also why records are meticulously crafted in the studio over a period of months and sometimes years by the artist, the producer, the tracking engineer, the mixing engineer and the mastering engineer. A lot of these positions are as carefully selected by the artist as the records are created. In a performance scenario the FOH engineer is responsible for the respectful and accurate translation of all the work put into each song by each of these positions. Preserving the integrity of the record in real time and balancing the instruments is only part of the job. Our core responsibility is to bring each record to life for the artist and the audience each night.
